Fumigation Services

Quoted per job after site assessment

Fumigation is the right answer when an infestation is inside the fabric of what you’re protecting — grain in store, stacked produce, container loads, or a building where surface treatment can’t reach the problem. It’s also a heavily regulated one, which is why every job starts with an assessment and ends with documented clearance.

We serve agricultural stores and commercial premises across the Brandon area. If a cheaper, simpler treatment will do the job, we’ll recommend that instead.

Stored-product insects are the usual reason for fumigating. Grain weevils, flour beetles and moths such as the Indian meal moth live inside the commodity, not on its surface, so a spray or a fog never reaches most of them. A fumigant is a gas. It moves through stored grain or stacked goods and reaches insects deep in the stack where nothing else can.

The gases used are highly toxic, so fumigation in the UK is tightly controlled. The space has to be sealed, signed and kept clear for the whole exposure period, and nobody can go back in until the gas has been tested and found safe. A space that can’t be sealed properly can’t be fumigated safely, and part of the assessment is checking that it can.

Fumigation clears the infestation, but it doesn’t stop the next one. Once a store is clear, cleaning, monitoring and good stock rotation are what keep it that way, and we’ll go through those with you before we leave.

When to call us

Live insects in stored grain or feed
Small beetles or weevils on the surface of a heap, in the bottom of bins, or climbing the store walls.
Webbing, clumping or warm spots
Moth larvae web grain together, and heavy insect activity can make one part of a heap run warmer than the rest.
A rejected load
A buyer or mill turning a load away for insects is often the first sign of a problem that has spread through the store.
An infestation that keeps coming back
If surface treatments knock numbers down without clearing them, the insects are probably living deeper in the stock or the structure.

How it works

  1. Assessment We inspect the space, identify the target species and confirm fumigation is actually the right tool — it isn't always, and we'll say so.
  2. Preparation & treatment The space is sealed, cordoned and treated. Exposure time depends on the target species and the structure.
  3. Clearance & documentation We verify safe re-entry levels and provide written records for your compliance file.

What's included

  • Site assessment and target-species identification before any treatment is proposed
  • Whole-space fumigation or fogging appropriate to the structure and the infestation
  • Sealing and safety cordon management for the duration of the treatment
  • Clearance testing and documented sign-off before the space is re-entered

Fumigation Services — common questions

Is fumigation always necessary?
No. Many stored-product problems can be dealt with by cleaning, a targeted treatment, cooling the grain or moving stock. If one of those will work, we'll say so at the assessment.
Is it safe?
Safety comes from the procedure: the space is sealed, cordoned and signed for the whole treatment, and nobody goes back in until gas levels have been tested and found safe. Treated stock is ventilated and cleared before it's used.
How long does a fumigation take?
It depends on the fumigant, the target insect and the temperature. Exposure can run from a few days to a couple of weeks, and longer in cold weather, followed by time to ventilate and test. We'll give you the timings at the assessment, so you can plan around them.
Do we need to empty the building?
Of people and animals, yes, for the whole exposure period, and the area around it may need cordoning too. Stock normally stays put, since it's often the stock that's being treated.
What paperwork do we get?
A written record of the treatment and the clearance, for your compliance file and for any auditor or buyer who asks to see it.
